Passivation
Amfin provide passivation services, a protective and decorative metal surface treatment for major aerospace and other industries around the world.
Specialist Passivation services
After the machining phase some stainless steels may require passivating, this is the process of removing free iron from the surface of components by pickling in acid solution. As well as cleaning the components the acid also reacts with the chromium in the stainless steel to create a passive film, thus improving the corrosion protection of the component.
Different components require different types of stainless steels including Austenitic, Ferritic, Free Machining,
Martensitic & Precipitation Hardening. These variations in Stainless Steels will dictate the Passivation process and in turn inspection process to be performed, a helpful reference guide to find out what process your material requires can be found on the last pages of AMS2700.
Nitric Acid Passivation
Amfin has the ability to perform 3 variations of Nitric acid passivation on Stainless steels complying with the following specifications.
- AMS2700 Method 1 Type 6, 7, 8
- ASTM A967
- MPS-ES-031
- 914-032-100 to 104
- EPRO227
Citric Acid Passivation
Citric acid passivation is sometimes offered as an alternative and less hazardous alternative to Nitric Acid Passivation and can be processed in line with ASTM A967 and AMS2700 Method 2.
Testing
Amfin’s in house laboratory has the ability to perform Copper Sulphate or Salt Spray testing for the above processes.
PLEASE NOTE THAT AMFIN NO LONGER OFFERS PASSIVATE PROCESSES WITH SOLUTIONS CONTAINING DICHROMATES.
THIS IS DUE TO UK REACH LEGISLATION AND THE OBLIGATION OF COMPANIES TO USE LESS DICHROMATES WITHIN INDUSTRY.
